Expressive Form: Drawing & Painting the Figure

Part of Lucas Bononi's

Build strong draftsmanship rooted in academic principles while working expressively.
Understand the sculptural nature of form through light, edges, and volume.
Compose dynamic, emotionally resonant figure paintings from life.
Receive personalized feedback to push both technical and creative growth.

Led by New York–based artist Lucas Bononi, this five-day intensive workshop focuses on the expressive interpretation of the human figure through the lens of academic form. The goal is to sculpt volume and gesture in paint and drawing while allowing room for intuition and personal voice.

Participants will explore how classical techniques can be the foundation for powerful, contemporary expression. Lucas guides students through the physics of light, the architecture of the figure, and strategies for designing compelling compositions. Throughout the course, students are encouraged to push boundaries while remaining grounded in form.

Lucas’s personal style—what he calls Form Expressionism—merges a deep respect for realism with a desire to break form open expressively. Students will receive one-on-one guidance and demos to help refine their ideas and discover what they want their work to say.

“The balance of realism and expressionism has always defined my work. I studied the rigors of classical drawing at Grand Central Atelier, while consistently exploring abstraction over the years. These two forces grow strongest when nurtured in tandem.”

A live model will be present and pose throughout the entire duration of the workshop. This is central to the instruction and is included in the student cost.

All levels welcome, though ideal for those with prior experience drawing from life and working with oils.

A list of materials to bring will be sent to you upon signing up.

The balance of Realism with Expressionism is something I've always done. In order to do my best work realistically, I joined Grand Central Atelier and in order to express myself, I've been taking abstract classes consistently over the last decade. Both extremes, I told myself, will grow only when isolated. I love both the same, like if they are my two kids.
