Sketching in the City

To sider fra skitsebog

“I am learning to see.” – The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge, Rainer Maria Rilke (1910).

In this workshop we will explore the city through our drawings. Developing a good observational drawing habit can be a vital step in developing your own style, taste and perspective as an artist. It is a way to capture an atmosphere or a moment, as well as being a solid foundation for improving your drawings from memory/imagination. It is also a great way of building a visual library to use in your drawing practice.

After a brief introduction to the basics of drawing, and observational drawing in particular, we will bring our tools and sketchbooks into the city – exploring it intensely through our sketchbook practice for a few days. The point is not to make finished and polished pieces of art, but to loosen up our hands, sharpen our eyes and strengthen the trust we have in ourselves as artists. We will work with time restraints, different materials and different settings to push ourselves out of our drawing comfort zones.

At the end of this workshop you will have explored different ways of sketching outside, collected loads of visual material to develop further, and hopefully opened a door to your own sketchbook practice.

Please note! We will be walking, standing and sitting outside for a lot of this workshop. Please bring comfortable clothes, as well as food and water!

Signe Wohlfeil

Signe Wohlfeil is an illustrator and artist living in Copenhagen.

With a deep love for stories, Signe’s work is inviting, expressive, and richly narrative. Through her mixed-media approach she creates atmospheric illustrations that embrace the wonky, the cluttered, and the intimately human.

Her background spans Denmark, Germany, Norway, and the UK, a cross-cultural experience that informs her empathetic visual storytelling and nuanced perspective. She explores themes of belonging, our connection to places, and domestic life, with clarity and warmth.

Signe graduated from The University of Bergen with a BA in Visual Communication and has also studied multiple courses at the Royal Drawing School in London.

Working as an illustrator, she has worked with clients such as Weekendavisen and Coffee Collective. She is currently working on her first book.
